Blackstone River Valley Solo Exhibition
Blackstone River Theatre’s Art Gallery will host a photography & mixed-media exhibit and sale – “Creative Pilgrimage” – by Karen McCann on display September 20 through October 26, 2025, viewable two hours before and during scheduled theatre events, in the upper and lower lobby of the Blackstone River Theatre, 549 Broad St., Cumberland, RI.
“Creative Pilgrimage” by Karen McCann – Artist Statement
“I have been practicing the Japanese art of Forest Bathing or “Shinrin-Yoku.” Using my camera, I explore various locations; but before even taking the first shot, I attempt to slow down my mind, my pace and my thoughts. Using all the senses including hearing, smell, and even touch, Forest Bathing encourages one to become calm and uplifted by the natural environment we are in. The natural world is my teacher and my guide. If I can be successful and separate from the daily grind and the monkey brain in my head, I will find myself shooting photos that are meaningful and bring me a sense of joy. This is the goal of the selection of Photographs and Mixed-Media pieces in this collection. My hope is that the viewer will see the intention of my “Creative Pilgrimage” and enjoy a pleasant moment of some of our beautiful local Rhode Island scenes.”
McCann strives to shoot thoughtful photos of her surroundings in Rhode Island and around New England. In addition to traditionally printed photography, she often prints her photos onto tea bag paper, enhancing with hand stitching to create unique pieces of mixed media art. McCann’s work has been included in several exhibitions including Gallery Night Providence, HeartSpot Gallery, Bristol Art Museum, Warren/Bristol Art Night, and Wickford Art Association. She has won awards at the Wickford Art Association and Sprout Gallery Art Show. She has been an active member of Rhode Island Threads Art Group for many years. She has a studio at 30 Cutler Street, Warren, RI.
